This is a wonderful activity to build reading fluency, extend vocabulary, and for reinforcing new or tricky concepts. Words of the day should be decodable and in line with what has been taught.

We started with the word 'fix' as I had just introduced the /x/ sound. There are many fun ways to introduce the word of the day. For our first one, I wrapped the letter magnets f-i-x in playdoh and had Emily uncover each affirming the sound of each letter as it appeared. She immediately put them in order to make the word 'fix' but support your child to try and build a word as needed.
We practiced tapping and blending to read the word. I then introduced the word written clearly on a card and again practiced blending and reading. We talked about the meaning of the word and Emily enjoyed using it in sentences.
Finally, we built the word on the back of the card using stickers and Emily put the letter magnets on the fridge so she could demonstrate her reading to others. As I introduce more words of the day, we will save them, read a few each day, and play games to practice reading fluency and concepts.
